Rug care hasn't changed all that much from the old days.
Just a few simple steps will keep your hooked rugs in
top shape:
First, keep in mind a rug is only as strong as
its foundation. Linens and cottons are generally sturdier
than burlap, but all will show wear over time. Use
thin rubber padding and place rugs in low-trafficked
areas to avoid straining fibers.
For regular upkeep, vacuum gently with an upholstery
attachment.
Air rugs outdoors occasionally, especially on foggy,
damp days. The humidity will keep the backing from
drying out, especially if it's made of burlap.
Shake rugs delicately -- don't beat them. They
could disintegrate in your hands.
If a rug is heavily soiled, it may be time to see
a professional.
Treat new hooked rugs with a spray-on repellent
as a preventative measure.
For spills or stains, blot liquids with a towel.
Clean area with a mild solution of cold water and
either white vinegar or ammonia. Test first on a small,
inconspicuous section. Avoid soaps, detergents, and
commercial rug cleaners, which may be counter-productive.
Suds can be hard to remove and may actually set a
stain. Loosen hard stains with a knife.
To store or transport, roll up so the top surface
faces out. This will prevent the backing from stretching
and weakening. Store in cloth or acid-free paper.
Plastic will trap in moisture. Never store rugs where
they'll be subject to extreme temperatures, such as
an attic or basement, and avoid exposure to excess
sunlight.
